How do I know if it is an emergency?
We often get asked how people can tell if their pet needs to be seen out of hours or as an emergency. While there are some conditions that always needs to be seen immediately, other cases can be hard to define. The general rule is that if you would take yourself to Accident and Emergency, you should take your pet to the vet! If you are at all worried, we would rather hear from you – it is better to be safe than sorry. Below is a list of emergencies we would recommend need to be seen immediately – however, if your pet’s problem is not on the list, but you are worried, please call us!
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Difficulty breathing
- Difficulty passing urine
- Collapse/ weakness
- Loss of consciousness
- Excessive vomiting and diarrhoea
- Any condition that appears painful
- Anything else you are concerned about!
We have a facebook page with information about how to treat your pet in an emergency. Remember, this is no substitute for getting professional advice, but being prepared may help you and your pet.
