What is Rabbit (Viral) Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD or VHD)?

RHD is a highly infectious and often fatal disease that affects wild and domestic rabbits. Transmission of RHD occurs by direct contact with an infected animal. Urine, faeces and respiratory secretions may also shed the virus. The virus may also be carried by the wind.

What signs to look out for

  • Fever
  • Squealing and excitement
  • Bleeding
  • Coma
  • Death

How do we treat RHD?
Unfortunately, mortality is up to 90% even with the best treatment. Therefore we recommend vaccination of all rabbits.
